Signing Day Wrap Up

GoPack.com press release:

I think it's a solid class. It's not a spectacular one, by any means, but one thing Tom O'Brien and recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie have shown over the years is that they are very adept at finding skilled, hard-working kids that are "coachable."

Petercuskie had a fantastic quote in this piece from Tim Stevens that stuck with me this week:
"We want to coach football, not coach effort."
Exactly. Stars are great and indicative of tremendous potential, but O'Brien and company have done a fantastic job of looking past the stars and looking for work ethic.

Hard to believe that Spring Football is right around the corner.

  1. there sure are a lot of OL and DE/DT guys on there. I like the looks of it. I only saw one RB, though .. are we stacked with RBs on the roster already?

and what position is "ATH" ... athlete?

  2. Correct, Athlete. Basically a guy that runs fast, jumps high and can do a lot of things on the football field, but doesn't have one specialty that he stands out at currently.

They're nice to have if you have some gaps in the skill positions or in the defensive backfield, which -- after the 2006 and 2007 classes -- State still has. The loss of Geron James at wide receiver, even though he's not a regular contributor, means we could always use more guys that can make plays as a wideout.

And I, too, am excited at all the linemen coming in. As someone on the monkey boards so astutely put it the other day, we've had plenty of 4- and 5-star running backs that had no holes to run through, and 4- and 5-star wideouts with no way to get them the ball. A poor offensive effectively neutralizes your skill weapons, as Clemson found out this year. Conversely, a great offensive line can make an average quarterback and running back look great.
